I've just finished reading Helter Skelter by, Vincent Bugliosi with, Curt Gentry for the second time after many years.  What can I say... Go and look for it on your bookshelf, at the next garage sale or... it can still be ordered from any bookstore.

Before I write about Helter Skelter, I want to point out a common lie of satan, which many people who belong to cults are conditioned to believe.  When we meet these people we must communicate to them the miracle of restoration and forgiveness in Jesus Christ as both the victor and the Savior of mankind. Some are conditioned from childhood to hate Jesus and distrust Father God. Much of this is humanly, as well as preternaturally, communicated via demonic spirits that set up in strongholds of delusion, illusion, and incorrect beliefs. The common thread of the lie is this.  They've gone too far and there is no hope of refreshment, healing, and eternal salvation.  "Hope for others, but not for me." THIS IS A LIE. The prophet Isaiah writes of the Antichrist of Revelation who will be (or is) bodily possessed by satan:

Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.  Those who see you will gaze at you, they will ponder over you, saying, 'is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a wilderness and overthrew its cities. Who did not allow his prisoners to go home (Isaiah 14: 15-17).  Read Isaiah 14 starting at verse 12.

Satan communicates to all his followers that they are prisoners who cannot go home.  The truth is God has open arms and will restore all those that are lost if they will turn to His son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth who came in the flesh and died for their sins.  How is this possible?  Here is the answer.  ...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation (Romans 10: 9, 10).  For whoever will call on the name of the Lord (Jesus Christ) will be saved (Romans 10:13).

Now, about this book I just finished.  My personal opinion: God preordained Mr. Bugliosi to try these cases.  Thank you, Father God. Vincent was the right man for the right time and had the courage to fight the endemic laziness of various bureaucratic systems.  His strong moral compass and intellectual curiosity to understand the dynamics of Charles Manson, his followers, and these crimes gave him the fortitude to stand for justice. Many times he was invited to take the easy route.  For example, when it was suggested that complete immunity be offered to Susan Atkins.  This so  offended Vincent that, at the first opportunity, he rescinded the deal that had been made with her attorney.

Although Vincent did not write about faith in God, this comes across in how he walked out a fierce commitment to achieve justice for the victims.   In numbering the victims I only wish the authors had included the son of Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski, whose given-name was Paul.  This precious baby-boy was a viable infant just two weeks shy of a safe delivery.  His name appears on his cemetery marker, put there by  his father and Sharon's family who so looked forward to his coming into the world.  As the most innocent of victims I'm offended each time Paul Polanski's name is omitted from the victim list. He is now in heaven.   King David said of his baby son that died soon after birth, "I will go to him, but he will not return to me" (2nd Samuel 12: 23b).
What I find interesting about this second read is the ease at which I concluded that Charles Manson was possessed by demons.  Today I know more and feel less inclined to be politically correct in drawing certain conclusions.  I would guess many of you saw what I did in what was communicated via the photographs and that quite famous maniacal, alien glare leaked through human eyes. Each decade we have antichrist examples, least we forget, that evil spirits and fallen angels are real and hate all humans.  These antichrist examples are informed by the many narcissistic characters in scripture  which build for us a protocol of recognition.  Given where we are in church history, not to be informed puts us at risk. For more on this read my book: DISCERNING SPIRITS.

Charles Manson was a sophisticated con artist, older than his carefully selected victims.  All of these victims were brought under a satanic, dangerous sphere of influence.  Manson had a "type" and like any skilled predator he hunted for his narcissistic supply in targeting selected victims.  I liked how the authors developed a thoughtful, in-depth exploration of these people turned perpetrators.  The authors do not superficially abandon those they write about to the role they played in these crimes and in the Manson cult.

Many who revisit this book may draw conclusions and find similarities in today's assault of thought control via the techno-isolation of young people.  Is sophisticated thought and mind control going on today and part of a planned satanic agenda to which the church is not only silent but intimidated?  Answer...

Vincent explored Manson's childhood and looked for explanations for why Manson became who he was.  Like all good writers he gives us the facts and lets us arrive at our own conclusions, which I am doing here.  Manson was a student of Scientology and other cults; not so that he could join and belong in any meaningful exchange, but to learn from these systems, developing his own personal signature.  Manson had grandiose plans rooted in a demonically communicated agenda.  As is always the case, part fantasy and part reality.  The process by which Vincent latched onto Manson as the prime culprit, how he drew certain conclusions and amassed the evidence and following these threads completes the picture of a prosecutor who was motivated, not by ambition, but primarily as a truth seeker however uncomfortable that made others or challenged the prevailing bias of the times.

Once he figured out what worked, Manson, aligned with his demons, didn't change his mode of targeting and operating.  He understood the psycho import of hypnotism via behavioral prompts juxtaposed with the use of drugs and particularly, acid.  He broke down the internal guarding and checking systems via abuse and mind control.  Soon his followers were numb to outrage and had lost moral and intellectual perspective; less and less able to exercise the precious and God-given gift of liberty; the ability to self determine a healthy course of action.  They became minions and in a very real exchange of preternatural energy came to embody their own demons.  When any "thing" takes over the will of a human being, whatever the port happens to be, there are always satanic assignments over which demons hold sway. Any believer who feels powerless to fight this battle is believing another lie of satan.

Although he was tried and convicted along with those that actually committed the crimes, Manson was very careful to distance himself in ways that the possessing demons would have orchestrated.  I say this because the person, Charlie... the boy who was no longer present to his body, was institutionalized and had come to prefer containment to freedom.  By the time he begins building his cult following "the family," whatever occult alignment that happened to cement the demonic imprint in Charles Mansion had taken root and displaced what was human.
I'm going to pull from this book in some of what I'm writing.  Helter Skelter - US Copyright; Library of Congress; ISBN 0-553-12222-9; Bantam Books, Inc.

The background of the book is an important capsule of a period of societal influence and history which impacted two generations in ways that previous and subsequent generations were not impacted.  I was part of this generation although I was not involved in the hippie movement or any other popular movement.  Nor did I call myself a conservative.  Much of what typified this history passed me by for reasons one could guess at from reading my blog.

Still, this was a unique period of history, both good, and not so good and it can be glimpsed via the backset of the book.  We saw the rise of the drug culture packaged as enlightenment. The civil rights struggle, the cementing influence of a certain intellectual elitism over traditional values and family. The still unsolved murder/assassination of a president boggles the mind.  The murder of key leaders like Martin Luther King is a perpetual wound to the collective identity of this nation.  What many who decry the so called "hippie culture" forget is that many people came to faith in Jesus Christ during this time. Although I didn't come out of any movement I found Jesus at age 23 during this time and found this faith to be a radical and transforming experience that continues to this day. Many of my peers took the rebel mind-set with them and demanded change from denominational constructs that decamped to several polarized extremes; some biblical and some not.
Bugliosi spent a lot of time attempting to understand Manson in the context of these times. He seems to have been more an observer than a participant, a man who knew who he was and didn't need the trappings of superficiality to stand in stead for him. If the legal premise upon which his case was set would fly, he needed to know who Manson was and understand the confusing dynamics of what is better understood today in the levels of programming and mind control that can be wielded over human beings. While the press  defaulted to the  superficial fear quotient proposing that Watson, Atkins, Krenwinkel, and Van Houton were average everyday kids overcome by Charles Manson's mystic powers the point is made that there was an exchange that took place.  Charlie was adept at identifying and drawing in his victims who, in this exchange, accepted the conditions.  In his wanderings Charles Manson came into contact with many people who exercised a certain discernment, deciding that he was either dangerous or crazy or both. It seems clear that for Manson all these murders were deeply personal and had a twisted rationale which the authors lay out in careful detail.
However... what is overlooked is the control of the demonic over the human vehicle and the satanic, preternaturally charged energy that works within someone who is demon possessed.  The demonic infestation inside the body of Manson was quite transparent in inviting people to recognize what was going on.  One example is that from a standing position Manson launched himself over the witness table and came within a few feet of the judge to threaten him.  But, as is often the case, the power of group think and conformity which works against the spiritual, God-given intuitive ability, causes people to affix a purely physical connotation to the evidence.  This, despite what would be logical to consider given certain evidence.
When we look for an understanding of how the demonic influences people we look for the commonalities evident throughout scripture and human history.  This is because satan is not creative and cannot create.  Satan is, as I often say, a crack addict on steroids legalist.  Its human followers and horde of demonic and evil spirits must work within these scripts.  Bugliosi lists the many similarities between Charles Manson and Adolf Hitler.  The author writes: "An apparently important influence on Manson, in both precept and example, was the dead man: Adolf Hitler."
It's important to say that via the demonic communication in the unseen realms Charlie Mansion was a student of Nazi Germany.  The despotic, ego-centric, false-god-power that Hitler exercised over so many made Charlie Mansion a devote' of Hitler as an occultist and an antichrist.

To understand three Biblical profiles of demonic possession read my book: DISCERNING SPIRITS.  E-Book available on Kindle, Nook, Screw Pulp - Soft Cover on Amazon and Create Space.

I recommend picking up Helter Skelter.  If you haven't read it before you'll find it compelling.  If you have, now older, you'll read it very differently.
Jesus came to set the prisoners free and some of the Manson cult turned to Him for answers and healing.  In doing so they gained forgiveness and the gift of eternal life... a gift once given can never, ever, never ever NEVER, EVER be snatched away.
When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcisism of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.  When he had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him (Colossians 2: 13-15).
Jesus Christ came to set the prisoners free and to proclaim liberty to captives.  I was one of those prisoners, now free.  I love Him so much.  If sin is holding you captive, if you think you can't be forgiven, that is a lie.  Believe the truth of the following verse and call on His name...
"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11: 28-30.)
