Addiction is a serious stronghold.  There are many kinds of such behavior and all of them are harmful.  When I watched the movie Fire Proof, produced by Sheerwood Pictures, I couldn't help being a little disappointed in the script.  There seemed to be an implication that once saved the main character, played by Kirk Cameron, would never again struggle with pornography addiction.  It happens that sometimes people do trust Christ and they are immediately freed from such bondage.  A person who trusts Christ is immediately justified and now has the power of God in their life to overcome.

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1: 13).

Healing from behavioral addiction can be immediate or it may be a process.  In sex addiction there are many strongholds and wounding from which deliverance and healing is needed; too often even physical healing as a consequence of such sin.  The behavior is the face of the addiction.  This is what one sees.  Then there is the shame and secretive behavior that keeps one in further bondage; bondage which Jesus Christ longs to break.  In this we recognize how one unhealthy strategy leads to another; the acting-out behavior is the superficial focus of what is first recognized.  And then there are the complicated ways that all addicts arrange their lives so as to protect the addiction at the cost of hurting those they love.

Often Christian believers have the unrealistic impression of themselves and others that recovery should be quick and easy.  Merely a matter of decision and self control.  The fact is  God wants us to know ourselves, to honestly confess our sins and ask forgiveness.  The start has to be a committed fast from all the triggers that draw one to act out.  Finding a way to do this, removing the triggers is necessary.  Get rid of the computer, put a lock or filter on the computer; turn over management of funds to a trusted loved one who understands the reason and can hold you accountable.  Be accountable to God and others.

During this time of fast consider the sins done to you in the past and the demonic imprint that comes with such abuse from which deliverance and healing is needed.  In addition to deliverance you may need Christian counseling; even counseling via a wise person who is willing to help or an accountability group.  In my new book: Discerning Spirits: Visionary Gifts in Practice (May 2013) I discuss these various strongholds.  It's important to hold onto the anchor of your position in Christ as sons and daughters of the King and to know and practice the Biblical tools of warfare.

God invites us into the process of being more like Him.  The Apostle Peter described this with such practical insight that we can imagine he counseled many with what he himself learned; a step by step road map for shedding deeply embedded patterns.   ...seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence (2nd Peter 1: 3).

Peter starts with moral excellence... a new standard by which we decide to live. Then adding knowledge of God a continuous and life long journey of growing more like Him.  Having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.  Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self control, and in your self control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love (2nd Peter 1: 4b-7).  Read the entire passage...

The process begins by building faith in Jesus Christ.  We do this by immersing ourselves in the wealth and bedrock truths of the word of God.  Reminding and re-learning, in emotional connectedness, what it is that we believe.  We can see that the expectation doesn't have to be so overwhelming that one never takes that first step toward healing.  Allow yourself to feel remorse; an awareness of sin.  Even when there is no real desire to change and feelings seem deeply submerged this can be a first step.  Peter tells us to start with the moral excellence of God and add to that knowledge.  Knowledge of scripture... we read the Bible.  Why?  Because we read in Revelation 19:13 that Jesus Christ is the word.  We don't have to preach moral excellence... we can take it in; into our hearts, our minds, our spirit as a mighty shield and powerful force.  He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God (Rev 19: 13).  Also John 1: 1-5

I've talked with many people who say they get caught up in one failure to the extent that it provides an excuse to fall further back into ever more harmful and damaging behaviors.  The cycle is hard to break.   Many addicts set themselves up to fail and this is a familiar pattern with many triggers.  God delivers a promise to His children regarding temptation.   No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it (1st Corinthians 10: 13).  If you find yourself tempted and don't see this "way of escape" stop to pray and then remove yourself from the circumstance that is providing the trigger.

Christians are not immune from satanic attack.  It is simplistic to imagine that there isn't a battle over those wounds and areas of bondage upon which satan once had control.  If you are reading this and continue to struggle consider that you may also need deliverance and that temptation is not merely your inclination alone, but that there is a territorial place within over which you need divine freedom. We are not alone in this fight.  Once saved... You are from God, little children, and have over come them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1st John 4: 4).  For a visual read: 2nd Kings 6: 15-17.

Some ties from our past need to be prayed over and broken. Sex within marriage and expressing selfless caring that celebrates our partner as a gift from God is never sinful. But liaisons from the past that were not of God can continue to have a hold over the mind through shameful feelings, regret, or as a comparative standard that a spouse might never live up to. In the same way pornography, and fantasy relationships or imagery that seem almost more real than the living reality of existence will always leave a preternatural imprint from which one must be, not only healed, but also delivered.  Too often we focus on the sin without understanding that all sin has a beginning; a once place of vulnerability and thus that dual solution of healing and deliverance.

Jesus began His ministry teaching in the Jewish synagogues.  One day in Nazareth he was handed the book of the Prophets.  He opened to Isaiah 61: 1, 2 and read these words recorded in Luke 4: 18, 19.  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.  He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord."

If you struggle with addiction these are intensely personal words for you.  These words are notice to satan who has squatted in sin upon your mind and in your body that in Christ that power is broken.  You are the captive that Jesus came to free (now and today).  You are the person blind who can begin to read His word and grasp His wisdom.  You are oppressed under a burden; a weight of sin.  You need freedom and health; no longer shut off from love.  Learn to hate the sin...  Walk into loving Jesus.  It is far easier to let go of oppression when we embrace Jesus (Romans 8).
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12: 1, 2).

What one binds and co-mingles the flesh to that which is not of God, this hurts not only the person engaged in that sin, but everyone else connected to them.  When two people engage in sex together in a sinful relationship that is driven by behavioral addictions that diminish identity as God's creation - a life draining, preternatural partnership takes root.  Choice dies a slow death as addiction takes over, leaving a satanic imprint; a deep wound that can become a stronghold upon which demons camp.

These strongholds / entrenched behavioral addictions there is first the acts themselves which should be understood as being in homage to satanic idols.  Such sin becomes an idol and it is placed on the throne of self-will and takes up residence in the flesh.  Then there is the door that opens to continually harm the soul and spirit of that person who has now endangered others connected to them.  Not only have they altered their God given destiny via sin, but they carry that sin and that demonic imprint having control over that person.  Overwhelming temptations are evidence of a need for deliverance from these evil associations.  There is the person Jesus loves and longs to free and the person that is a victim of satanic control.  Stop telling lies that support the addiction.  Tell yourself the truth and know that God desires you to be free. Read Psalm 32 and 51.  The biggest lie that satan tells an addict is that they are only hurting themselves.

Sufferers trapped by sexual addiction avoid honesty and intimacy and have done so a long time; perhaps even your entire lives. Who is it that God actually and truly created you to be?  There may be a toxic disconnect between the wires of conviction and the words spoken and all that is practiced in the sinful shield of a masking behavior.  Trapped by life-stealing behavioral addictions you may readily experience the pretense of love, but not the life giving reality.  Actual feelings get buried under the well practiced rote-programming and rubbish heap of many lies.  Seeking help may seem very scary. The prospect of what you may lose is daunting. There are many feelings you have that you are practiced at not feeling.  There is probably past trauma and abuse. Why you chose addiction while others equally abused did not is not useful to look at alone.  You need help for this and God created us to need each other.  If you are intensely threatened by the prospect of opening yourself up to accountability, healing and deliverance you can start simply with Jesus Christ.  Begin praying for supernatural protection and leading that He will miraculously send. If you have trouble open the Bible to Psalms and pray His word back to him. Then reach out to those safe life-lines that He will send.  If you don't, it will come eventually by some other means.  But you already know this.

Search me O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me.  And lead me in the everlasting way (Psalm 139: 23, 24). But if we judged ourselves rightly we would not be judged (1st Corinthians 11: 31).  Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and be healed.  The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much (James 5: 16).  He who listens to the life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise (Proverbs 15: 31).

What I say here in this paragraph may not be for everyone, but needs to be considered and prayed about.  Evaluate the temptations and triggers that speak into your mind.  If you have a life stealing addiction you have already opened the door for such a preternatural partnership to take root.  Seperate your own will that speaks to your heart from the domonic voice that comes from a preternatural aliance.  Is this voice you, is it a demonic lure?  Ask Jesus: "Is this true of me, Lord?"  Some people who struggle with recovery and cannot achieve recovery and sobriety from the behavior for any length of time may have the awareness that they are not alone; that a foreign or alien alliance has taken up residence in the interior places of ones being.  You may believe the lie that you are a helpless passenger on a road to destruction. It is possible that early in life, or at some time in life you were targeted by a satanic group or person.  Pastors and priests, those in high profile Christian positions are routinely targeted in this way, as are their families.

This aspect of the addiction will not resonate with everyone.  If it does, however consider that you may need deliverance; the supernatural power of God's grace to banish evil spirits from having sway over your life, to restore autonomy; the God-given right to self-determine a course of action.  It is freedom that satan most wants and needs to steal.

You may have vivid dreams that are life-like.  You avoid sleep or can sleep for only short periods of time.  There seem to be triggers that you don't remember, but you know that something apparently superficial has set you off as the catalyst that draws you to programmed and destructive behavior.  You find yourself in the sin-circumstances without recall for how you got there.  Exploring this aspect of how satan programs sin using the services of other human beings, or better said, using human spirits committed to evil practices might be applicable for some and not others.  Freedom Encounters, Ken and Sylvia Thornberg, are a resource for those who feel led to explore this aspect of bondage and especially if in the past there has been occult associations in families or from the past.  This ministry offers  valuable training to churches all over the world.  Go to their website and read some of the valuable information offered.  Effective deliverance usually requires after-care and a long term commitment to know yourself well.  Don't isolate.  Church and recovery groups can provide healthy connectedness. Further, getting a deliverance team together to pray for you, people who understand this and will respect your privacy, may be an option that supports accountability and counseling as you step into the freedom from bondage that is found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Do you know Him?  If not stop to pray and ask Jesus Christ to reveal Himself to you in power, significance, and healing.

What is overlooked is how those oppressive and damaging behaviors partner across realms with evil territorial spirits that run and under-gird whole areas of sinful endeavor within the sex trade industry; within the drugs for sale industry or whatever area that connects behavior to a territorial satanic stronghold.  The beginning pornography addiction will very soon include other addictions, do further damage to self and loved-ones; and, without intervention will progress as any deadly disease does.  Intervention is needed and no one is beyond is beyond help.  For every Christian that satan neutralizes via sin a powerful and loving potential is lost.  Yes, this is warfare.  Fight the addiction and learn the tools of biblical warfare.

Many addicts don't get counseling until they are caught.  They feel shame.  They fear the loss of what they have if they become honest.  Today there are many support groups and excellent Christian counseling programs.  If you are in a part of the world that doesn't offer this, seek out accountability from a wise brother or sister in the Lord and ask Jesus, through His word and the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, to be your accountability partner.  In psalm 51 King David takes one through the process of confession and repentance; absolutely necessary to restoring intimacy with Jesus Christ: Savior, Healer, Deliverer.  Read psalm 51 and also Psalm 32.  In part...

How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!  How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit.  When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groanings all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer.  I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; "I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord," and you forgave the guilt of my sin.  (Psalm 32: 1-5).

There is also deliverance... superficially talked of and little understood in too many churches.  Today, every church should have a deliverance and a prayer and healing ministry. Sadly they do not and so two links to two ministries below offer training and also referral for those who realize they need, not only restoration with Jesus Christ, but supernatural deliverance from evil spirits.  And how do you know you need deliverance?  You know when you continually lose the fight; continually drawn back as an entrenched behavior to that same place of slavery.

I always imagine that I'm talking or writing to people who have Jesus Christ in their hearts.  If you are not a Christian or doubt your salvation pray and ask the Savior into your heart.  Tell the Lord Jesus Christ that you want to know Him better; that you desire healing and forgiveness.  How is this done?  ...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation (Romans 10: 9, 10) and ...for whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10: 13).

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you from the law of sin and death (Romans 8: 1, 2).
God designed us to need each other.  Find a church and a company of believers with whom you can interact. Where ever you go don't fall into the habit of meeting expectations so that you can fit in... a trap for all addicts.  Open yourself to worship and get to know Jesus Christ through reading His word.   This means you may visit several churches before you land in the right place.

  6. All the way from Nigeria, I have been blessed but more importantly is not to fall back again. Hardly, can I point to a church in my country that they have a known support group for addicts, though ; there is deliverance ministry in most ministries but counselling and support group is likewise essential. I would love to have and read the author's free copy on deliverance.
