IS WATER THE SPECIAL DOMAIN OF EVIL SPIRITS? I was asked this question / read my answer below and ask: What does an alarmist concept steal?

Scripture calls satan a thief and a liar. The shortest job description every written reads: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10: 10).

There is an established pattern of our enemy as the imitator and spoiler of every good and gracious concept.  A picture of the Holy Spirit flowing like living water creates powerful imagery.  Jesus' words are carefully and deliberately chosen to lodge that image in our minds, allowing us to understand something of the life-giving character of the Holy Spirit; water being a symbol of this life-giving attribute; something we cannot live without. In John 7: 37-30 the apostle John quotes Jesus.

"If you are thirsty, come to Me!  If you believe in Me, come and drink!  For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within."  John then goes on to explain... (When He said "living water," he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in Him.  But the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet entered into glory.)

In terms of the principal of inversion / occult and occult practice - water and the headwaters of certain places hold pagan significance.  Places can become contaminated by the evil worship of demons. Is this true of all watering places... certainly not!  True of most water, NO!  If we discern a problem we have the power through Jesus Christ to cleanse places of evil imprints. I discuss the freedom of places in my book: DISCERNING SPIRITS: VISIONARY GIFTS IN PRACTICE.

An interesting verse in Job chapter 26 reads: He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness (Job 26: 10).  And to put this in context we continue to read the end of Job chapter 26: By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent. Behold these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder who can understand? (Job 26: 13, 14).

Satan is already judged. As Christians we may be called to deliverance of places and people. Some are called as exorcists.  Generally satan only has the power we give over through lie-fear scripts, false beliefs that may be mere tradition and has no basis in scripture, lack of knowledge of His holy word, and a failure to practice authority in sending demons and evil spirits to God for immediate judgment; sending them into the abyss, never to be heard from again and destroying all back ups and replacements in the name of "Jesus Christ of Nazareth who came in the flesh."  Quoting scripture and using our words in the power of Jesus Christ like a sword.

Today we have the New Testament and in that written account...  And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases (Luke 9: 1).  Believing in the priesthood of the believer, that nothing stands between us and Jesus, we can assume this authority.  "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing will injure you (Luke 10: 19).

Truly, truly, I say to you he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will; because I go the Father.  Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.  If you love me you will keep my commandments
(John 14: 12-15).

How I happen to be writing on this topic...

A friend of mine forwarded an article written by a woman who goes on in some detail about various evil spirits and Christians of American Indian descent praying over places of water where demons may especially command or currently reside. The article addressed other subjects related to evil spirits as well.  What did I think? If one could isolate a few nuggets of truth they were difficult to find since they were firmly enmeshed with transparent attempts to raise alarm for self serving purposes. And all this juxtaposed with a request for donations.  More significant still, no scripture was quoted.

God wants us to be informed.  We need to know something of Satan's character so we can recognize evil at work through human beings, systems, and institutions.  But we can make a mistake when we focus too much on the dark side; looking for details as if that somehow equips us to do God’s work better.  The best of what God has for us can be derailed when we embrace what should utterly repel us, or is the latest pseudo-christian alarmist buzz subject.  The answer is succinctly and always Christ crucified and the victory of His name invoked, the power of His blood and His word, strengthened and empowered by willing obedience.

The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil (1st John 3: 8b).

A false teacher can quote this verse, expound and twist the logic, having us believe there is little more and focusing us in unhealthy balance on what is dark and evil.  All of what we are meant to know and embrace, so that we are fully equipped to fight our enemy, is found in scripture.  The problem is that we don't always embrace scripture for what it says.

No where in scripture do we see people blessed because they chased after the knowledge of, or proactively sought out engagement with satanic-preternatural forces. Every prophet in the Old Testament shunned such activity and spoke out against it without needing to jump in the thick of it.

The article in question quotes no scripture to support anything said. I can't speak for all of you; but I want scripture quoted as my authority and the foundation of my faith; without which we would be wise to question whether the words espoused are man's opinion or God's.

When I'm involved in a cleansing or have discerned something that informs or equips prayer it comes to me as a whole impression, complete from God.  I may "test the spirits," (1st John 4: 1), but I don't need to investigate how satan works since scripture has already told me.   I look for balance from the body of Christ, others who have gifting that I lack so that together we can be fully equipped for the task ahead.  When I get this impression or word or awareness about a stronghold I'm left with little doubt.  Sometimes I'm surprised.  What I think I'm heading into can turn out to manifest differently.  When I'm inclined to share something deduced from human reasoning the experience is entirely different.  And of course being human I have to be prepared since I can make mistakes and be wrong.

When I start out I need to know from the person affected how they arrived at this juncture of oppression, sickness, or harassment.  Usually a failure to forgive others, or disobedience/sin opens a door.  I want to know what door was opened that has given satan legal authority in these circumstances.  We are likely to be only temporarily successful if we don't get at the root.  I tell people they have to be honest and confess their sins before we start.  Sometimes people are sincere, but they don't remember or we are dealing with a generational curse; or a place that is polluted and some component wasn't addressed.

Demonic entities have no home. They are homeless; having been cast out of the perfect home of heaven. As a facsimile of this heavenly home being lost forever they are crack-addict on steroids compelled; they are super-glued to a dictatorial  mandate to influence, oppose, or occupy human beings as a prize of war. They are singularly focused on opposing the sovereign God of the universe who cast them out of heaven and down to earth.   (Read Revelation 12: 7-13 and Ezekiel 28). They've lost the war in heaven and so they can't oppose God directly as they once did.  They visit a malevolent aggression on humanity as God's mobile creation. They do this as all persons vacillate on the hair breath of an existence defined by choice.  The majority of unsaved persons have a marvelous and miraculous capacity to house God's Holy Spirit within them.  For this very reason satan and his demon-cohort hate the mere humanness of our existence.

Once saved the Comforter, the Holy Spirit never "leaves or forsakes us."  When we turn on a bright lamp in a dark room the room lights up and all is revealed. There are no darkness lamps. We can't buy them; they don't exist.  The lie is the demonic stronghold.

Then Jesus again spoke to them saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of Life" (John 8: 12).

Once saved we have this same Light of Christ living within us. We carry it with us and by choice we place it on the lamp stand so that others can see God at work through us.  Wow!  Demons see this light and flee.  The ever present glow of God's light is supernatural proof of our authority in Christ.  By it, ministry is fueled, prayer is powerful, darkness flees.

If a Christian sins they open a door to satanic oppression or even physical illness.  Can a Christian have a demon and be in need of deliverance.  Yes, they can.  They need to be restored so there is no room for darkness.  The key here is obedience.

"You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5: 14-16).

God promised all believers the gift of His Holy Spirit at the time they trust in Him.

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you (John 14: 16-18)  Are we a vine in the Branch or are we not? (John 15: 1-11)

There are times when a believer is under attack by no fault of their own.  We want to assist this person in opposing what is stifling God's plan for their life; robbing them of joy and peace.  In conducting this investigation we are learning about the individual and never presuming to treat everyone the same.  To do so is to risk harming someone who has already been cruelly victimized.

Lots of people are looking for a Christian success; seeking “Christian” acclaim. Bill Bean grew up in a home infested by demons and through that experience God equipped him to cast out demons; even as an untried teenager called to defend his family under horrible persecution. I doubt very much that Bill ever goes seeking after more demonic warfare that God hasn't specifically called him to engage in.  He's busy enough.  He's learned more than he ever wanted to know about demons; their tricks and lies and the massive hole of toxic need for man's worship, for their attention, and sins enslavement.

That said… evil spirits are prevalent and innumerable. They may or may not be temporarily or especially at the head waters of a river as my friend asked.  They could and often are, anywhere abandoned by praying believers.

What would move me to stop and investigate would never be a random inclination.  Never a useless curiosity.  I'd have to be invited and even then I might not be the best person.  I feel I can never know enough about how Jesus and His Holy Spirit work; the will of the Father and my firm abiding in Jesus as a branch in the Vine. (John 15: 1-11)

So… what did I think of this article.  Not much. For persons easily trapped by false thinking the author has effectively raised the issue of water being somehow the domain of evil.  Is this true?  In a beautiful picture of God saving Israel we read: "I also swore to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became Mine," declares the Lord God.  "Then I bathed you with water, washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil" (Ezekiel 16: 8b-9 / read the entire passage).

Salvation is symbolized by water baptism; Christ being baptized by water and water being blessed in Christ's Name for holy purposes, infused with power as we sprinkle it as a reminder of God’s will and purpose. Water is not only necessary for life but it prolongs life and cleanses us from dirt and micro-organisms, keeping us healthy.  The church has a long tradition of using water in deliverance and exorcism; seen as a symbol of new birth born of faith.  And… we are so much made up of water as God’s creation and need water to live.

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my Son, in whom I am well-pleased" (Matthew 3: 16, 17).  John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the throng of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire (Luke 3: 16).

We are wise to ask ourselves, what does an alarmist concept steal and does it steal?  We are not to be ruled by fear.  When scripture isn't quoted as the bedrock, foundational truth we have no balance.  Even then, we are wise to read verses in context and especially if we feel uncertain.  God gives life and health… satan steals.

A beautiful river or lake; the blue ocean or a swelling bay dotted by sail boats can and should be viewed as God’s gifts.  Artists paint such pictures and we are moved to frame them and hang them in our homes.  We pause and view such landscapes as evidence of God's wondrous creation over which we have dominion.

The truth:  The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains.  The world, and all those who dwell in it.  For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers (Psalm 24: 1, 2).

Beware this connection building of aliens and demons; the demonic attempt to indoctrinate us into dismissing the one for the other. When the rapture takes place satan is laying the groundwork so that most people, still deluded, will say it was aliens who removed a large segment of the earth's populace and not Jesus returning to meet us in the air… rescuing us from a holocaust far worse than any previously experienced in human history. So great that a mighty God will end those days sooner than they might have been and all for the merciful love of His creation.

Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.   He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue and honor him (Psalm 91: 14, 15).
