HAPPENSTANCE REVEALED

I was at Eagles Nest last night, enjoying the preaching of my pastor, Arnold Roberts. There is something about church on Saturday evening that appeals to me. When I can't get into Memphis I'll sometimes visit the Catholic church up the street.  Saturday not being one of them, there are lots of differences between the two.  The one very closely follows the prescribed schedule while Arnold... well if he feels like going longer, lets just say he isn't constrained by time.  In both I feel the Holy Spirit's presence and in both I'm so privileged to be in the midst of worship.

Yesterday I had three stops to make before and after church, dropping off books and enjoying a longer stay than intended with my friend, Joan. I had one more book to deliver and called to see if it was too late to come by.

The drive into the country at night is peaceful. I know the road well. Though I can't see clearly I hold the image of how the trees form a canopy over the road, the clearings, and the planted fields now revealing the farmers selection of a crop. In early and late spring it's easy to note the sites where houses once stood for certain bushes, not often seen in the wild, and for the lilies and paper-whites, bulbs long ago planted round a house and still adorning the places where children once played. I'll sometimes stop the car and look for the depressions left by former traffic, for fallen rafters, a pile of fireplace bricks, and the last evidence of a barn or outbuilding.

I guess it's the writer in me that likes the feel; the sense of these once occupied places and the stories that could be told of the people that lived there. Imagining thus, and the lingering angst that I sometimes feel...  this is appeased in the  knowledge that nothing, and I mean nothing, is lost; nor goes unremarked by our God.

All who claim me as their God will come, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them (Isaiah 43: 7).

About a half mile from my friends home, in quick succession, two very beautiful sprays of fireworks burst over the dark road. Not unusual on Memorial Day Weekend, but so unexpected it seemed a unique gift to me. And then, seconds later, as I slowed to watch and in the last scattered remnants of light I saw it.  The deer I would have hit emerging from the tree line, sprinting across the road  and into the clearing beyond.  The explosion of light, the explosion of the hunter's shot and... no fool that deer.  But, for a brief second, inches from my car, I could almost feel the air displaced.

God is good. I love Him and know full well that if not for Jesus Christ sending His Holy Spirit to soften my heart I would have died, suicidal and lost in my early twenties. It may sometimes feel as if there is no plan, feel as if He doesn't notice, isn't watching and that the past, the present, and the future is not immutably tied into a divine purpose; intensely personal. But, it is.

"I am the Lord; that is My name! I will not give my glory to anyone else. I will not share my praise with carved idols. Everything I prophesied has come true, and now I will prophesy again. I will tell you the future before it happens" (Isaiah 42: 8, 9).

And He has! Open His word and read it. Jesus is listening; pour out your heart to Him.  He always listens, never slumbers or sleeps, is never weary or tired.

...do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior (Isaiah 43: 1-3a).
