TWO PORTRAITS OF POSSESSION

Question: Do you sometimes wish you could find solid teaching material, or personal study material, on some of these issues long ignored by most denominations?  I wrote: Discerning Spirits: Visionary Gifts in Practice providing an overview of this topic.   You can order it from Amazon.

In six hours I'll be teaching at a church I formerly worked at. I love going back and seeing familiar faces. I don't choose the lessons, but follow a subject schedule that comes out each quarter. Tomorrow we'll be looking at Mark 5: 1-20. The author of the lesson referred to demon possession as mental illness and misquoted scripture to support that wrong assumption.

This "coincidental" topic fit perfectly with my desire to prepare some personal study and or teaching material for use by others. I want us to recognize the differences between certain types of possession. Tomorrow I'll be contrasting two very different portraits of possession. We'll look at the "man from the tombs, with an unclean spirit," who was delivered by Jesus Christ, with Judas (Luke 22: 1-6) who was not.

Judas is what I call Ambulatory Possessed.  Scripture says that, "satan entered into Judas."  And what did Judas do? Evidencing no sign of mental illness, and none of what we look for when someone is what I call, "conflicted possessed," Judas went to negotiate the price of Jesus betrayal.  He was then led to suicide.  There is always a death agenda associated with satanic strongholds.

The picture of the man from the tombs is what we may see depicted in the Hollywood horror mold.  Evidencing super human strength and preternatural disturbances in the body and environment this person is internally and actively fighting for what they have willingly surrendered to satan; opening the door for demons to take up residence.  What is surrendered is that precious, God-given free will; the ability to self determine a course of action. This autonomy is what satan seeks to control via various addictions and entrapment toward life-stealing behavior.   Only because of free will can we respond to the word of God, through the calling of the Holy Spirit and come to faith Jesus Christ.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but, have eternal life (John 3: 16).

I talk about the three states of possession in my book, Discerning Spirits; a $12.00 buy on Amazon.  The last picture of possession is what I call "Fatal Possession."  This is the picture of the anti-Christ of end times and, or, an anti-Christ prototype as in a Hitler or a serial killer.

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2: 2, 3).
