CONFLICTED POSSESSION / AMBULATORY POSSESSION

There are five states of possession which I described in my book: Discerning Spirits: Visonary Gifts in Practice.  All examples are reflected in Scripture.  These states can sometimes be seen as a process as in a cold settling into pneumonia and pneumonia becoming congestive heart failure.  But not always.

Judas is Ambulatory Possessed. We know he was possessed because scripture says so. And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the twelve (Luke 22: 3). Judas is fully operational. He interacts and plans the betrayal of Jesus in a cunning and methodical manner. Judas' altered condition is extreme and yet the internal control by Satan is not evident to those he plots with (Luke 22: 4-6). Nor is it clear to the disciples with whom he has traveled, lived, and worked over the last three years (Luke 22: 21-23).

Read Mark 5: 1-20. Compared to Judas, the man from the tombs, appears to be the most radically impacted by possession, but the truth is he is more likely to be helped. If he is not helped, and if possession doesn't kill him, he will move to the operational stage of possession, being Ambulatory Possessed. Without the intervention of Jesus Christ he would have lost this important battle for freedom.
The man from the tombs (Mark 5: 1-20; Luke 8: 26-39) shares some symptoms in common with psychosis. Additionally he displays super-human strength, is both outwardly violent and self mutilating. He has information common persons are not privy to. The demons identify and know who Jesus is. They are compelled by the superior position of Christ, who is fully God, to address Jesus, using one of His many royal titles. The singular and holy title used by the demons, calling out from the possessed man, is one unknown to the disciples at this time. Jesus is: Jesus, Son of the Most-High God (Luke 8; 28c). The demons, "Legion, for we are many," knew Jesus in heaven before the "war in heaven," (Revelation 12: 7-12). The power of Jesus Christ to utterly and completely vanquish it's presence is a foregone conclusion. Why? Because that war in heaven was victoriously won eons ago. God was the victor, Satan the vanquished. It would be another blog to discuss the reasons we fight such battles with Satan on planet earth today.

The man from the tombs has been actively and courageously fighting the demonic infestation that had taken up residence within his body. The battle is visible and brutal. It threatens all who seek to help. It threatens not only the physical life of the man, but the eternal outcome of a soul's purpose. If the satanic goal is successful then person-hood, that dignity and marvelous potential to love and live will recede as the demon emerges as more and more operational. This is warfare with eternal significance. This is warfare with the field of battle being men and women. If not for the intervention of Jesus Christ, the man alone will fail. Only light can chase off such darkness.

In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it (John 1: 4, 5).

This demon possessed man of scripture is what I term, Conflicted Possessed. He is in danger of loosing this battle, moving into the next phase of possession where his voice will be more and more crushed under the weight of a brutal occupation. And yet... from far off, across the sea of Galilee, Jesus hears. ...before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear (Isaiah 65: 24b). Bringing his disciples along in order to demonstrate a miraculous and instructive lesson on how such deliverance must work, Jesus reveals His power, just as He does today through the love and selfless commitment of those called to a deliverance ministry.

They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had the "legion"; and they became frightened (Mark 5: 15).

Examples From Film

A Hollywood example of Ambulatory Possession, though requiring some reading into the intent of the movie, is Mr. Brooks (2007), with Kevin Costner in the lead as Earl Brooks. In this story, and from my experiential perspective, the demon we see, played with outstanding skill by William Hurt, is a lesser demon; a familiar. If this were a real scenario the exorcist would need to uncover the primary demon handler, a much stronger demon to whom familiars are subject. In this movie we see that Mr. Brooks is operational; a feature of Ambulatory Possession. He has an interactive awareness of his relationship with the familiar. We see Mr. Brooks attend an AA meeting and, though weak and growing weaker as the plot unfolds, he mounts a defense and continues a feeble, pathetic attempt at autonomy. In the very end, as Earl Brooks kills his would be acolyte, we might actually make a case that Mr. Brooks steps into the final, utterly lost state of Perfect Possession. At the very end we are left with the thought that he will kill his less skillful daughter. Her ineptness posses a threat to the demonic possession being unmasked. The climax of any exorcism is this very moment when the primary demon handler is forced to identify itself. No demon will tolerate this risk, unless being forced to do so by the power of Jesus Christ working through believers, and especially those believers that have the spiritual gifts necessary to function in the role of exorcist.

In the movie Constantine we see an example of Perfect Possession. Perfect Possession is a term on par with the state of the Antichrist and is also a term I lifted from Malachi Martin. Although it's a stretch to see this, since it's necessary to wade through much fictional license, you might watch this film and see if you can identify the one character that is perfectly possessed. Go to comments below and let me know your choice. I have to say I love the conflicted, imperfect character played by Keanu Reeves, since this is what we all are, but for Jesus Christ, on our best days. In my opinion this is one of Keanu's best roles but, ... if I had written the script, I would not have killed off the endearing character of Chaz. The interaction between John Constantine and the brave Chaz softens and gives depth to the Constantine character. We are surprised and intrigued that he is willing to mentor anyone and realize there is more to this protagonist than first appears.

Yes, I've always wanted to write movie reviews so forgive the digression.

The classic Hollywood portrayal of possession is seen in The Exorcist (1973). Like the man in the tombs, the girl Regan, is Conflicted Possessed. She can be rescued. A successful exorcism by someone called to such a ministry is very likely to happen as it did in the movie. It would be more difficult to rescue someone like Mr. Brooks and impossible to rescue the Perfectly Possessed since they've committed the unpardonable sin; they've so rejected God and so blasphemed the Holy Spirit that God has left them to pursue the hellish fate they've endeavored to embrace.

As always let me know your thoughts. I'm looking forward to the day when this blog will have more followers.
